Why Following Your Passion is Healthy For You

iawpcatalogimage“If you choose a job you love, you will never work a day in your life.”

The wise words of Confucius, while spoken centuries ago, still apply today. Confucius knew that following your passion fuels you and keeps you healthy. But little did Confucius know that most people in today’s world would work hours, days and years disconnected from their passion and purpose.

If you’ve been holding back on following your passion in life, now might be the time to reconsider. Following your passion has lasting affects on your health.

If you find yourself stressed at work, not engaged and without a sense of purpose in life, it’s time to pay attention. Today stress at work is consuming people and is linked to many diseases including obesity and heart disease to name a few.

When you follow your passion in life, you have a sense of purpose and engage your creativity. Research shows that people with a sense of purpose experience better health, both mentally and physically. Quite simply, creativity keeps you healthy.

When you don’t follow your passion, you may end up resenting the work you do. Some people don’t mind if their 9 to 5 job doesn’t fulfill their passion, but usually they have time to participate in activities or hobbies outside of work that fill their passion on the side.

It’s important to give time to thinking about what lights you up. Your passion can easily be tucked under the rug as life hurries by. The following questions will help you focus in on your passion. Be as specific as you can. Also, allow yourself to be truly honest and real with your answers. Spend some time answering these questions on your life and passion.

  1. What brings you joy on a daily basis?
  2. What makes you happy in general?
  3. Think of a time when you were totally consumed with what you were involved with. What were you doing and what did you enjoy about it?
  4. What makes you feel alive?
  5. What do you most look forward to each day or each week?
  6. What brings you great satisfaction?
  7. What scares you the most in life?
  8. What worries you the most?
  9. What don’t you enjoy doing? (Knowing what we don’t like can often help us find what we do enjoy.)

Now, consider, what small step can you take to begin fulfilling your passion now? Go do it!
