Do You Have Business Envy?

When your business isn’t going exactly how you planned or taking off with a big bang like you hoped it would, it’s easy to start wondering what you’re doing wrong. Are some of these questions weighing you down?:

Why aren’t people coming to my events?
Why aren’t people visiting my website?
Why aren’t more clients signing up?
Why I am not as “good” as “insert colleague you compare yourself to”?

When I first started out in my health and nutrition coaching practice, I felt this way almost everyday! And I couldn’t help but notice other coaches and biz owners who seemed to have it all together. You know, the ones who seem to have clients a mile long waiting to work with them and opportunities that seem to come their way like magic.

What did THEY know that I didn’t?

I had a serious case of Business Envy.

Do you know what’s so ironic about having Business Envy? It’s actually a good thing that can help you and your business evolve to the next level, when you understand what it is and how it’s meant to serve you.

First off, get this: Envy is defined as an emotion that occurs when you resent another person’s perceived superior achievement.

The key word here is Perceived.

See, it’s all in your own perception. You think your colleagues have it all together and so you spend time wishing you were them. But you have no idea what is really going on for them in their life or their business, right?

When you perceive something, you are projecting onto another person something that may or may not be true.

That means, it’s all in your head!

Plus, you’re wasting precious time thinking about them instead of thinking about YOU!

The point here is, what if you could start perceiving yourself the same way you perceive those you are envying?

What I figured out was, there’s a greater lesson to be learned from Business Envy. My personal coach helped me to really get what my Business Envy meant. (BTW,I’ll be interviewing her later this year in a special call you won’t want to miss!)

My envy was a mirror. It was there to show me what was actually possible for me.

So I could go on wishing, comparing and feeling sorry for myself. Or I could awaken to something much greater in myself. My envy was there to show me that I could be all that I really desired. I could be whatever I wanted to be.

My business could be that great, I could have that many clients, and I could be that BIG. If, and only if…..

If I would allow myself. If I would perceive myself in a new way. If I could open up to that possibility.

It was a huge breakthrough.

So instead of wallowing, wishing, comparing and judging, I decided to start dreaming, doing and leaping! There’s three things I did that changed my business very quickly and if you implement these, you, too can have a breakthrough:

  • Start Seeing Yourself Where You Want to Be and Take Action from There– I decided to go for what I wanted. I took a look at who I wanted to be partnering with and “playing” with and started reaching out to form partnerships with people that before I would have been afraid to contact. I just had to get over my Business Envy and start talking to those I was most afraid of!
  • Result: Lots of new partnerships leading to lots of new clients and a lot more fun in my business.

  • Get Support: Instead of holding back and playing small, I decided what I wanted for my business and got support to get there at superspeed, rather than waiting, procrastinating and going-it-alone.
  • Result: I was supported and inspired to take big leaps in my business and claim what I wanted…and got what I wanted because I decided to go for it.

  • Get in the Conversation: If you want more clients, take a look at what you’re doing to attract more clients. Are you telling people what you are up to? Are you asking others what they are working on? Are you learning how you can support your ideal clients? Are you asking people to make a decision to work with you when that moment arrives, or are you shying away from that conversation? (You know what moment I’m talking about!) If you’re not having these conversations, then you might be spending too much time in your head instead of helping others to achieve what they want. Get out from your office, your head and your computer and get in the conversation.
  • Result: More conversations, more learning, more yes’s!

Remember, your business is a journey, just like life. You’re meant to learn and grow in the process, not beat yourself up. And if you’re like me, you’ll start realizing that your business is your greatest spiritual practice. When you can open up to that, there’s so much to learn and so much to gain. So take your Business Envy and see what it really means for you…then turn your envy into action. I’d love to hear your thoughts so leave a comment below.
