Holistic Cures for the Common Cold

 
 
The best thing you can do for the common cold is to prevent from happening in the first place. And, it starts with having a healthy immune system. So, we want to care for ourselves all the time, not just when we’re sick. What are some of the things we can do to take care of ourselves and keep our natural immune defenses prepared?
 
Sleep – Getting enough sleep is important because this when the body does maintenance, repair, and detoxification. Without enough sleep, your body may not be able to function at its best and your immune system may be negatively impacted.
 
Antioxidant Lifestyle – Live an antioxidant lifestyle! Eat lots of vegetables, fruits, and whole food that are filled with antioxidants to boost your immune system. Think of antioxidants as the reinforcement your immune system needs to fight off foreign bodies, viruses, and infections before they really take hold.
 
Herbs – You can also boost your immune system with certain herbs like oregano, basil, and turmeric. You can prepare herbal teas, add them to recipes, or add in the forms of oils or supplements.
 
Vitamin D – Vitamin D is so important for our immune system. It’s one of the reasons why colds are more common in the winter when we’re not getting as much sunlight. While the body can naturally manufacture Vitamin D from sunlight, it may be appropriate for some people to supplement, especially in the winter months.
 
Sugar – It’s time to rethink our sweet tooth. Sugar weakens our immune system. Avoiding sugar, including refined carbohydrates is perhaps the # 1 way to boost your immune system.

So, what should you do if you get a cold despite following all the guidelines to strengthen your immune system? Trust in your body and nourish it with the fuel it needs to get you back to feeling like yourself again. Getting enough sleep, eating whole foods full of antioxidants, and avoiding sugar are all still important; however, once a cold has taken hold, what should you do?
 
These natural remedies might help!
 
Raw Honey – Raw honey is antibacterial and antiviral. It boosts the immune system and is very soothing on your throat.
 
Eucalyptus – Eucalyptus oil is great for clearing nasal passages so you can breathe better and get some rest. Put it on a wet warm towel and place it on your chest for a warm aromatic wet compress or do a steam shower with the oil or over breath in the steam from boiling some water with eucalyptus oil.
 
Nettie Pot – Using a nettie pot can also help you clear your nasal passages. A nettie pot is a small vessel used to gently flush water through your nasal passages.
 
Vitamin C – Vitamin C is one of the best antioxidants to support your immune system. Consider eating plenty of citrus and taking a supplement when your immune system is in overdrive such as times when you’re down with a cold.
 
Ginger – Ginger also helps support returning to good health from a cold. It helps clear congestion and boosts immunity. Try shredding ginger root and adding it to some hot soup or enjoy some hot ginger tea.
 
Broth – Bone broth is rich in minerals that support the immune system. It contains healing compounds like collagen which heals your gut and reduces inflammation. It could even be considered a superfood! Think about making bone broth ahead of time and freezing it as it takes 24 to 72 hours to make broth from boiling.
